The
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, celebrated annually on January 1st, the Octave of Christmas, is a day honoring the Blessed Virgin’s motherhood of Jesus. The precise title 'Mother of God' goes back at least to the third or fourth century. In the Greek formulation,
Theotokos, or God-Bearer, it became the touchstone of the Church’s teaching about the Incarnation. This title for Mary was affirmed as the Council of Ephesus in 431AD.
