The Liturgy of the Word for Children takes place each Sunday at the Noon Mass from September through the first week in May, and at the 10:00AM and 12Noon Masses in the summer. It is a separate liturgy that adapts the Gospel message in a way that enables the children of the parish to better understand what happens and what is proclaimed in the celebration of the Mass. All children who are present at Mass are invited by the celebrant to come forward before the traditional Liturgy of the Word; they are then taken by adult volunteers to one of the religious education classrooms for their liturgy, which is taken from The Children's Lectionary. Afterwards, the children rejoin their families at Mass to continue with the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a sensitive way to allow children to participate in the formal worship experience of the community; to form them in the liturgical language of the Church; to nourish and guide their spiritual growth; and to immerse them in the Word in ways they will be able to understand.
